Ham/Amateur Radio...Whatzz That ???
Ham or Amateur radio is basically a hobby but there is much more to it than what is to a usual hobby.By the help of what is called a Transceiver (Transmitter+Receiver) you are able to communicate with all your fellow Hams (As amateur radio operators are called)all over the world anywhere anytime and free of cost.The sheer joy of communicating with a person somewhere in some corner of the world is the passion which which drives all Hams.We can of course argue that in this age of the internet and all latest gizmos,what is the use of such a thing?That however is a useless debate for people who have a passion for radio communication and have a deep desire to explore the world and its people in his/her own way (what great proof is needed than the ever increasing poulation of Hams around the world!!!);no wonder many of the great people the world has seen had a ham radio license.
All you need to have to be a ham is a license to operate (which,going by the Stats,is of course a bit difficult to get in India).Alongwith the License you get a call-sign to identify yourself on air.The Equipment you are going to use may be either homebrewed or purchased.
Ham radio is also of great service to society in times of natural calamities or war when normal modes of communication are disrupted.Hams all over the world have tirelessly set up their own temporary stations in such places trying to sustain a vital communication link between the outer world and the affected area through times of despair over the years and over the world.

A Typical Rig....
A typical Rig will consist of a transceiver,an amplifier,an antenna tuner,a morse key and a microphone and of course an antenna.
It is important to note here (since the mention of a morse key has come) that one needs to learn morse code in order to get a license to operate.The morse code is a communication method in which signals are sent and interpreted in terms of dots and dashes or dit's and dah's.It is a very effective way of communication and has found universal acceptance especially through Maritime applications.
